New Types of Business Access Control & Security Systems

New Types of Access Control Systems and Business Security

When you run a company, security and access control can be a high priority. There are likely some places that only certain individuals should have access: the rooms where you keep your client information or sensitive company documents, for example. Similarly, keeping employees safe and your building secure is a legitimate goal for many businesses, as well. In the past, access control could be as simple as locking a door, but in today’s world, the technology behind these systems has grown much more advanced. Now, there are methods to ensure that only the right people are getting access to the right rooms, not just anyone in the building. Additionally, there are ways to manage and keep records of who entered which areas of your building to make sure that your company stays secure. Check out an overview of some of these new types of access control systems for business security below.

Smart Cards: Do More With Less

When you think of business access control cards, you might think of card readers on the edges of doors that you can swipe, insert, or tap a keycard on or into. However, smart cards have now entered the playing field, and they can do a whole lot more than just open doors. Smart cards can store biometric information, control information access, transmit time and attendance information, and offer gateway access to office equipment and material checkout. Plus, smart cards can facilitate other company perks and programs – such as digital cash, loyalty points, membership programs, and more – by storing that information right on the card. And these cards usually work by proximity, not by physical contact, so they are part of a much faster and more efficient type of business access control system.

Biometrics: Beyond Fingerprints

Biometric business security systems are relatively new but are rapidly gaining popularity. You might have heard of biometric access control in terms of fingerprint or handprint scanners, or maybe even a retinal scanner, but biometrics are still advancing to offer much more complex, accurate, and secure methods of access control for companies.

Hands-On Biometrics

Fingerprint and handprint scanners have been around for a while, but there are concerns that come with them. The prints are on the surface of the skin, which means that they can be duplicated (though it is very difficult). Recently, however, we have seen the development of palm vein scanners, which use infrared or near-infrared scanners to map the veins that lie beneath the skin of one’s palm, which are difficult to accurately see or map out in regular light. As a result, these are often considered more secure than fingerprints or handprints.

Eye-D-ing Employees

Another classic biometric is the retinal scanner. Retinal scanners read the blood vessels and patterns within the back of your eye, and these are harder to replicate than other methods like fingerprint scanners. However, these have not been implemented very much since they were introduced for commercial use in the 1980s.

Recently, we have a new type of business access control system based on iris recognition technology. These scanners read the distinct patterns and details in the colored part of your eye. This type of biometric is considered to be particularly secure due to the fact that no two irises are alike, not in even in twins or even on the same person. In other words, if you look close enough, your own two irises aren’t even the same. As a result, these are becoming popular among businesses and governments, and they are even being introduced as smartphone security systems. Plus, these systems are often preferred due to the fact that they do not require the employee to touch the scanner.

Have Your Employees Smile for the Camera

An issue typically associated with biometrics that sometimes comes up is the fact that these often require time to work. In other words, an employee would have to come up to the door, offer the scanner the appropriate biometrics, and wait for the scanner to read their information and match it against the records in the system. However, newer facial-recognition-based systems can actually read an individual’s facial features as they approach a door.

A facial recognition security system for business based on this new software would only require an employee to look into an infrared camera. Processing times are less than a second, so these new types of access control systems can help businesses avoid bottlenecks that are common with more traditional biometric or key card systems. These systems, like the retinal and iris recognition systems, are also more hygienic; they do not require the employee to touch a scanner, as with a fingerprint/handprint/palm vein scanner.
